The redesign of the playgrounds and school spaces proposed in the project seeks to renaturalize these environments by encouraging participation during the process and learning within the center, integrating climate action into the educational curriculum. The entity points out that these are collective processes that reinforce the active participation of citizens and contribute to improving environmental conditions at the urban level. In addition, it indicates that the introduction of nature into the city is key to mitigating the effects and adapting to climate change, as well as to maintain the biodiversity of the ecosystem and increase its resilience.

The general objective of the project has been to promote throughout the national territory the renaturalization of educational spaces and their pedagogical function for the mitigation and adaptation of the effects of climate change in built environments.

The specific objectives were as follows:

  • Promote a network of educational spaces renaturalized as climate refuges, as well as agents interested in transformation.
  • Know and communicate the legal and administrative situation for the implementation of redesign projects in the centres.
  • Create an accessible knowledge base with pedagogical background, current redesign examples, and practical information.
  • Disseminate the project and the importance of the objectives sought.
  • Celebration of 5 thematic days, which were attended by 457 people in total. Taking advantage of the meeting spaces created with the conference, 16 open opinion spaces were also set up and 25 interviews with experts were conducted. In addition, a report was written with the conclusions of each day and 28 video-interviews with experts have been published.
  • Holding 15 theoretical-practical training sessions in informative or training centres for educational communities, with the aim of establishing a framework for action in the renaturalisation of school spaces. The figure of 748 registrations was reached in total.
  • Compilation of experiences and web repository through an interactive map with 43 practical cases of renaturalization of educational spaces. As dissemination and research work, a traveling exhibition was also carried out in 5 locations, with a total of 124 visitors, and 5 publications were made in informative magazines.
  • Accompaniment in the participatory design process , through training sessions and meetings for the presentation and debate of the preliminary projects to transform the playgrounds of 7 educational centers.
  • Communication of results to different institutions and competent authorities: associations of architects, departments of Education, city councils and other agents involved.

Through the Patios x Clima programme developed at the state level, different actions have been carried out for training , information and dissemination of the benefits of the renaturalisation of educational spaces and the city, to the population in general and to public administrations in particular.

In the first place, the celebration of 5 informative days in cities such as Seville, Madrid or Barcelona with the support of different local and regional administrations stands out, as well as the realization of 5 traveling exhibitions associated with these conferences, by the collaborating local agents.

In addition, the holding of 15 training sessions of very different formats in informative or training centres have made it possible to establish a framework for action in the renaturalisation of school spaces, receiving requests for advice and training from the Autonomous Communities of Galicia, the Canary Islands, Castilla y León, the Basque Country and Andalusia. 7 projects for the renaturalization of different educational spaces have also been drafted, carried out in a participatory way.

For the purposes of dissemination and communication, the creation of the Patios x Clima website and the writing of 5 informative articles in specialized magazines stand out. Finally, the creation of a whole professional network and educational communities in transformation and growth is noteworthy, with more than 450 people who have shared informative sessions in person.
