The entity states that, throughout history, rivers have been used as a source of energy and life, a means of transport, a landfill, etc., which has meant, to a greater or lesser extent, the degradation of their waters and their banks, as well as the flora and fauna that inhabit them. For this reason, the entity continues, freshwater ecosystems are one of the most degraded natural environments in our country, with their conservation and improvement being their priority. The study of these river ecosystems and the determination of their state of conservation, together with the corresponding restoration and improvement in situ of these threatened ecosystems, will be the backbone of the river volunteering programme, proposed by the Cabaña Real de Carreteros and based on the participation of citizens, which aims to directly improve the state of the rivers of the Duero and Ebro Basins.
The main objective is to conserve the riparian landscape, restore enclaves, improve ecological connectivity and educate about the great importance of habitats linked to fresh water, through the promotion and promotion of environmental volunteering and citizen participation, as the best tool for the protection and enhancement of our rivers, riverbanks and wetlands. mainly from 30 towns in the Duero and Ebro basins:
