This Wednesday, May 23, the Biodiversity Foundation is the protagonist of the ONCE coupon on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary. The five and a half million coupons that go on sale today with the slogan ‘Biodiversity is life’ commemorate the two decades that the Biodiversity Foundation has been working for the conservation of natural heritage and our biodiversity.
The Biodiversity Foundation was born in 1998 with the mission of contributing to the protection and conservation of natural heritage and biodiversity, through the development of conservation projects and the channelling of aid and funds for the development of projects of other entities.
Attached to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment, the Foundation ensures the protection of our rich biodiversity. Spain is the country with the greatest biodiversity in Europe; its territory is home to more than 85,000 animal species and between 8,000 and 9,000 vascular plants, which is 80% of those in the EU and 60% of those found in the entire European continent.
The Foundation works by managing European funds and projects and its own funds. Through its different calls for grants, it supports numerous initiatives to conserve terrestrial and marine biodiversity, fight climate change or promote the green economy and employment, initiatives launched by entities, NGOs, associations or universities, among others.
Do you want to know what projects the Biodiversity Foundation is working on?
You can check out the projects we support to protect terrestrial and marine biodiversity, curb climate change and improve environmental quality and learn how we promote the green economy and jobs.
In addition, we invite you to learn about some of the projects we coordinate, such as LIFE INTEMARES, the largest marine environment conservation project in Europe, whose objective is to achieve a consolidated network of marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network, or LIFE SHARA, whose purpose is to strengthen the governance of adaptation to climate change and increase resilience to climate change in Spain and Portugal.
