LIFE Teal

LIFE

The marbled teal is the most endangered duck in Europe, in critical condition in Spain. Habitat loss and degradation is their greatest threat and endangers the survival of the species. Wetlands are impacted by drought, pollution, the proliferation of artificial barriers and other threats caused by human activities.

But there is still time to reverse the situation. To this end, we have launched the LIFE “Coordinated actions for the recovery of the marbled teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris)“. From 2021 to 2025, the project will carry out 22 actions in 7 of the 13 critical sites where 83% of the breeding pairs in Spain are located.

With LIFE Cerceta Pardilla, Spain will conserve not only one of the most emblematic ducks of our country, in danger of extinction, but also one of the most important ecosystems for the health of the planet, which is among our main allies in the fight against climate change: wetlands.

The project is supported by the European Union’s LIFE Program and operates in Natura 2000 Network sites in Spain.

The main objective of this project is to improve the conservation status of more than 3,000 hectares of wetlands to reverse the risk of extinction of the marbled teal and achieve a minimum of 125 breeding pairs in our country.

In addition, specific objectives include eliminating and mitigating threats to the species, such as habitat reduction, hunting or lack of water quantity and quality, strengthening the species’ populations through a captive breeding program, improving knowledge of teal ecology, integrating the ecological requirements of the species into sectoral policies, and raising awareness among key stakeholders of the importance of the species and its habitat.

In order to try to reverse the dramatic situation of brown teal populations and their habitats, research, conservation, governance and awareness-raising actions have been implemented.

In the area of research, an evaluation of the genetic variability and structure of the captive and wild populations will be carried out, as well as an update of the conservation strategy for the marbled teal. This will be accompanied by actions to improve knowledge of the species through the development of a conventional tagging program and another, via satellite, to increase information on its biology throughout the annual cycle and on its movement patterns, to know its population status, threats, possible management actions and to assess the effectiveness of protection measures applied.

As conservation actionsIn addition, priority farms will be purchased, a practical reference guide will be prepared for the management of the species’ habitats to ensure their maintenance and evolution to a better state of conservation, and action will be taken on land located in critical places, where their habitat will be restored and their natural and non-natural threats will be controlled. In parallel, the populations of the species will be reinforced through a captive breeding program and the release of specimens.

As part of the actions to improve governance, the participation, training and awareness of relevant sectors for its conservation, such as irrigators or hunters, among others, as well as society in general, will be promoted. It will also involve the Maghreb countries, where it spends periods of its life, to improve knowledge of its movements and threats.

Likewise, in order to disseminate the results of the project and promote knowledge of the species, it will be accompanied by different communication actions in the media, environmental education and awareness with members of educational centers of all levels, promotion of ornithological tourism and environmental volunteering.
