Viladecans City Council

Viladecans is a municipality located in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona with 66,707 inhabitants. It is surrounded by nature of high ecological and landscape value (the Sierra de Miramar to the north, the Llobregat Delta to the east and the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park to the south). However, the city’s growth has not respected its natural environment, creating a gray barrier to ecological connectivity. Seventy-nine percent of the infrastructure in the urban core is gray and tree cover barely covers 9%. Faced with this situation, the municipality has begun to work on the renaturalization of green spaces (diagnosis of naturalization of Viladecans). PLAN VILADECANS 3-30-300 will promote the transformation of the city based on the development of its green infrastructure, improving connectivity with natural spaces and the increase and conservation of biodiversity. This will improve the livability of the city and the quality of life for its inhabitants.

PLAN VILADECANS 3-30-300 will develop one of the strategic lines of the Naturalization Sector Plan, the 3-30-300 Program. This will include the actions that will respond to the needs identified in the PSN diagnosis based on the 3-30-300 standard. Objective 3 of this rule, each person must be able to see at least 3 trees from their home, will be addressed, on the one hand, with the planting of 635 trees in the Torrent de Can Preses, and, on the other hand, with the planting of 9,106 trees and shrubs in 12 indoor areas (parks and green areas) and on the sides of the C-32 highway. These plantations will act as climate refuges and CO2 sinks, being able to capture at least 139.9 tons over the course of the project, in addition to offering other environmental benefits, such as improved air quality, urban landscape and reduced acoustic impact.

Regarding the 30th of the norm, to have 30% of tree mass in the municipality, both the intervention in the Torrent de Can Preses and the creation of an urban forest next to the C-32 highway, as well as the reinforcement of the vegetation cover in parks and gardens, will contribute to this objective, increasing the green cover of the area up to 30% when the trees reach their optimum growth.

As for objective 300, that the neighborhood has a quality green space less than 300 meters from each home, the rehabilitation of the Torrent will contribute to its achievement with the naturalization of the environment, and the redefinition of uses, which will reduce paved surfaces, increase the permeability of the soil and allow the creation of bike lanes that connect Viladecans with neighboring municipalities, putting within reach of the Can Palmer-Can Batllori neighborhoods a quality green area. In addition, these measures will be accompanied by actions to promote urban fauna. For example, 150 nest boxes for birds and 30 nest boxes for bats will be installed, as well as shelters for invertebrates.
