Biostimulants with microorganisms to reduce nitrogen fertilizers in horticultural crops (MicroMar)

MITECO

  • This project aims to develop biostimulant products with microorganisms that reduce the application of nitrogen fertilizers in lettuce and melon crops by at least 30%.
  • It also aims to establish low-cost fertigation strategies that are sustainable and environmentally friendly, testing them in different plots to evaluate the effectiveness of the different treatments.

The main objective is to use biostimulant products formulated with microorganisms to enhance agriculture in the Mar Menor, reducing the use of nitrogen fertilizers.

Specific goals include:

  • To know the real fertilizer requirements of the two most important crops, according to cultivated area, in the Cartagena area (lettuce and melon).
  • To obtain new biostimulant products formulated with microorganisms to reduce water and fertilizer inputs to agricultural systems while improving production, crop quality and soil health.
  • Validate and evaluate in full-scale agricultural systems the application of fertilizers with microorganisms through pilot plots.
  • Development of a biostimulant product based on microorganisms to reduce the use of conventional nitrogen fertilizers, while stimulating the vegetative and productive development of plants.
  • Agronomic validation of formulated biostimulant products to determine whether their use is capable of reducing the contribution of conventional fertilizers without loss of yield and crop quality.
  • Communication and dissemination actions.
